History
The Taylor Shield competion is held monthly, traditionally on the first Sunday of each month, with a couple of exceptions, eg September ( Fathers Day). The shield dates back to 1964-65. In that first year the winning club was Port Kembla. The Port Kembla Club no longer exists as such. During the height of spearfshing popularity, the late 1960's 1970's, there were a number of clubs on the south coast and there were two zones in the region, one being the Southern Zone which still exists today. The other was the Far Southern Zone.
As the number of competitors lessened over the years, so did the number of clubs. The smaller clubs had difficulty in functioning with only a few members so it made sense to join the stronger, bigger club, being the South Coast Skindivers Club, which has survived since about 1965. A similar fate fell upon the Far Southern Zone, joining the Southern Zone. The two major championships that were hosted by the Far Southern Zone, the Far South Coast Championhips and Eden 3 Way State Titles were taken on by the Barracudas and the Southern Zone hosts the South Coast Championships.
The Taylor Shield Today
The Taylor Shield is now contested within the Southern Zone, which comprises of the Barracudas and Reversby Workers Club. Each competitor dives not only for his individual points but also to contribute to a club score. The sum of these points over a competiton year decides the winner of the Taylor shield in that year. Barra's have won the Taylor Shield 28 times in 44 years, RWC 13 times. Other clubs won the title the other 3 times.
